leaf (v., n.)
Lots of reflecting happening here on my part, as I leaf through the different projects I've been a part of over the last year and a half!
In light of this, I dedicate this entry to turning over new "leafs," "leafing" through memories, old habits, and the ways we're used to doing things so that we can assess what we can take from the past to use in the future in times of changes and transition - all, fittingly, in time for fall.
My position at the motion graphics studio I've been working at PT is slowly drawing to a close as I prepare to start a new job in early September. I've been working on a best practices document to leave behind when I leave in a week or so, which has made me reflect on a lot of the work I've done over the last 9 months - namely, designing marketing and content plans and auditing and executing workflows to create more efficient ways to brand the company using content.
Because I'll be working a 9-to-5, I also recently had to reject an offer to TA for a design course at SFU, a position I held for 2 semesters last year. This has brought back a lot of fond memories of leading undergrad students through InDesign tutorials and design iterations - as well as generally reminded me of my own student life.
This last week, I also started setting up a template for the second book of the My Mother's Story series that I've designed and managed the production of. This has made me take a look at my original process to decide how I want to implement it this second time around.
Every now and again, it's really healthy to shed or "leaf behind" what's no longer working for us as well; though while doing so, it's also all the more important to evaluate what is worth keeping, so that we can hold on it to all the more strongly in times of transition.
In terms of the book I'm designing, I feel more ready to take on the next installment; in terms of saying goodbye to being a Masters student and the possibilities of TAing, I welcome it; and in terms of my new job, I feel prepared for it. In terms of leaving my current one...I'm slowly preparing myself for that, too.
I've had a great time at my current job. I have learned a lot of new things as I reacted to new trends in social media and online communications on behalf of the company. I have enjoyed offering my expertise to build up the brand, and look forward to doing more of it in the future, even on a very part-time basis. And I've met some wonderful people who I've shared hilarious moments with, struggles, successes, and all that human-y goodness that we all seek out in the world in one way or another. Thanks, y'all!
And I'll leaf it at that, before I get too sappy (oooooh!)
